Following recent reports, Nigeria will continue to strive to boost its oil production to reach two million barrels of crude oil per day in the coming two years since the recent figures show an increase in the country’s oil production.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) indicated that the company was still targeting the target due to an impressive increase in its production levels, which were seen in recent months.
Data by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) revealed that in May 2026, the crude oil production stood at 1.53 million barrels per day. This was the highest level seen in the past 15 months since it surpassed the daily production quota set by OPEC, which is 1.5 million barrels per day.
With the addition of condensate production of 170,446 barrels per day, Nigeria’s overall daily oil production is estimated to be around 1.7 million barrels per day, setting a record high for 11 months and further solidifying Nigeria’s status as the biggest oil-producing nation in Africa.
The current statistics point to a consistent growth in Nigeria’s oil production industry following a long period of decline due to the country’s oil theft problem, as well as attacks on its oil pipeline facilities.
It appears that government efforts to prevent oil theft and protect its oil facilities have positively affected its oil production facilities, leading Nigeria to meet its target oil production for OPEC.
Nigeria is planning on exploiting the tight crude oil supply that exists in the world as a result of the geopolitical challenges facing some of the key oil producing countries. This objective will see an increase of 100,000 barrels of daily production within the short run.
According to NNPCL, increased production coupled with security and operational efficiency will enable Nigeria to produce 2 million barrels a day.
This target if realized will go a long way to benefit Nigeria by improving the revenues earned, earning foreign exchange, and its position within the international energy sector.
