Peter Obi Emerges NDC Presidential Candidate, Raises Concern Over Rising Insecurity

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Obi secured the party’s ticket unopposed during the NDC national convention held in Abuja on Saturday, May 30, 2026, after no other aspirant purchased the nomination form before the deadline.

While delivering his acceptance speech, Mr Obi thanked the leadership of the party, including NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson, members of the National Working Committee and delegates drawn from across the country.

He described his emergence as a collective responsibility aimed at rebuilding Nigeria rather than a personal political ambition.Mr Obi stressed that Nigeria would struggle to achieve meaningful development if ethnic, religious and regional divisions continued to dominate national discourse.

He added that Nigerians must embrace unity, mutual trust and shared purpose to move the country forward.

He warned that internal division remained one of the greatest threats to national progress, adding that nations often collapse when citizens turn against one another.

Speaking on insecurity, the former governor expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, noting that terrorism and violent crimes had continued to increase in recent years.

He cited global security rankings which, according to him, showed that Nigeria’s position among countries affected by terrorism had deteriorated significantly over time.

Mr Obi maintained that economic growth would remain difficult as long as citizens and businesses operated under fear and uncertainty.

He added that protecting lives, securing communities and restoring confidence across commercial routes must become a major priority for any responsible government.

Mr Obi also reflected on the past achievements of the Nigerian Armed Forces, recalling periods when Nigerian troops earned international recognition for peacekeeping and conflict resolution missions across several countries.

He mentioned operations carried out in Rwanda, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Lebanon, Cambodia, Haiti and other conflict-prone regions.

The former presidential candidate further noted that Nigerian military officers once held respected positions in international peacekeeping institutions, citing retired Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor as an example.

He pledged that an NDC-led administration would tackle insecurity decisively while working to restore Nigeria’s reputation both locally and internationally.
