The Managing Director of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for securing a new dumpsite aimed at resolving the state’s persistent waste management challenges.
Dr. Wokoma disclosed that the facility is now fully operational and is being run in line with environmentally friendly practices to reduce odour and minimise impact on nearby communities.
He said that adequate measures have been implemented to control stench and ensure the site meets required environmental standards.
The RIWAMA chief noted that the new dumpsite has significantly enhanced waste evacuation across Rivers State, particularly in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas.

A major boost, according to him, is the construction of a nearly two-kilometre concrete access road leading into the facility, which now enables waste trucks to operate efficiently even during the peak of the rainy season.
“The improved access has reduced turnaround time for our trucks, increased the daily volume of waste evacuated, and considerably eased pressure on collection points within the city,” the agency stated.
Dr. Wokoma said the development forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to restore Port Harcourt’s reputation as Nigeria’s Garden City through sustained improvement in waste management infrastructure. Governor Fubara has also secured a second dumpsite at the Iriebe/Elelewon axis.
The RIWAMA Boss gave assurance that operations at the facility would be scaled up while strictly adhering to environmental guidelines, as the agency works towards fully restoring the Garden City status of Port Harcourt.
