President of the African Football Confederation, Patrice Motsepe, noted the improved funding and strong backing for Nigerian football, saying Nigeria’s success in the sport would benefit not just the country, but Africa as a whole.
Motsepe spoke during a meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Kenya where discussions focused on football reform and Nigeria’s growing standing in African sporting activities
For the CAF president, Nigeria is too important for African football to be ignored. “If Nigeria wins, Africa wins” Motsepe said.
According to Motsepe, Nigeria possesses talent, influence, football history, and a huge fan base across the continent.
He explained that Nigeria has ample capacity to guide football reform in Africa, each competitively and professionally. According to him, stronger financial backing and long-term assistance should help Nigerian football unleash greater achievement in stages in any discipline.
Motsepe also advocated for Nigeria to play a bigger role in the administration of continental football, supporting the country’s web hosting involvement in major CAF activities, including the CAF General Assembly
He believes Nigeria’s visibility and joy in hosting the most important dressing game makes it a natural destination for major football gatherings on the continent.
The discussions replicate CAF’s developing hobby in strengthening partnerships with some of Africa’s footballing powerhouses to boost growth across the game.
For Motsepe, the message has been clear: investing in Nigerian football is not always about one nation.
It is about strengthening African football as a whole. Because when one of the continent’s biggest football nations grows stronger, the benefits are felt far beyond its borders.
