The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed an X account linked to its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, describing it as fabricated after a forensic investigation.
In a statement shared on its X handle, the commission said the account, which initially appeared as @joashamupitan and later changed to @sundayvibe00, does not belong to the chairman.
INEC said the conclusion followed forensic and cybersecurity checks carried out on the account after it drew public attention.
According to the commission, the investigation found no link between the account and Prof. Amupitan’s official email address or phone number.
It also noted that the account had no digital footprint on archival records prior to April 2026, suggesting it was recently created.
The electoral body further pointed to irregularities in the account’s activity, including a post where a reply appeared to carry a timestamp earlier than the original post it responded to.
INEC said the account was later renamed to @sundayvibe00 on 10 April 2026, shortly after screenshots of alleged partisan content attributed to it began circulating online.
It added that several other accounts using the chairman’s photographs had also been identified.
The commission stressed that Prof. Amupitan has never operated any personal X account and has not published political content on social media.
INEC said the matter has been handed over to security agencies for investigation under relevant cybercrime laws.
It urged the public to rely only on its official communication platforms for verified information.
