In line with the approved academic calendar, all public and private primary and secondary schools across Rivers State have been instructed to resume on Monday, April 20, 2026.
The instruction to resume was revealed in a statement on Thursday, April 16, 2026, by the state Ministry of Education.
The statement by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Peter Nwagor, called for strict adherence to the resumption date for the third term 2025/2026 academic session.

Nwagor also charged all government-owned public and private schools across the state to operate within the prescribed guidelines and ensure that academic and non-academic activities commenced Monday.

His words: “The Rivers State Ministry of Education wishes to inform the general public that primary and secondary schools in the state will resume for the Third Term 2025/2026 Academic Session on Monday, 20th April, 2026.
“All public and private schools operating in the state are, by this announcement, expected to resume academic and non-academic activities for the Third Term, 2025/2026 Academic Session on the approved date and operate strictly within the prescribed guidelines.
“All private schools operating in the state are also required to adhere strictly to the government-approved academic calendar for the 2025/2026 academic session and resume accordingly on Monday, 20th April, 2026.”
Reacting to the resumption notification, a resident of the state, Mr Moses Azubuike expressed concern over the deplorable conditions of some government-owed public schools in the state.
He lamented that, “all the government schools are now in bad condition, no teachers, no good learning environment, no desk for pupils to seat on, government school fees is now higher than that of a public schools.
“Parents are now the ones paying for school teachers salaries and maintaining the so called government schools.”
