Zabbey says HYPREP Interventions Tackling Pollution, Illegal Refining in Ogoni

The Project Coordinator of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, has stated that the interventions of the project in Ogoniland are aiding in reducing environmental pollution and illegal refining in the region.

This was disclosed by Prof. Zabbey when he received the Coordinator of Operation Delta Safe, Major General A.A. Idris, at a courtesy call on the Project Coordination Office in Port Harcourt.

According to the Project Coordinator, the intervention measures implemented by HYPREP do not only concentrate on environmental restoration but further emphasize promoting peace and security in the community through effective engagement of the stakeholders.

He noted that the creation of job openings in the course of HYPREP’s programmes has given people other sources of income, preventing them from indulging in crude oil theft and refining.

Furthermore, the Project Coordinator emphasized that the provision of infrastructural facilities and cooperation with the community members, inclusive of former artisanal refineries, have assisted in maintaining stability in the region.

In the earlier statement, Major General Idris had stated that this meeting was meant to foster closer cooperation between the security organizations and HYPREP. He explained that better sharing of information and intelligence would help in improving the protection of the country’s vital infrastructure.

The representatives of HYPREP and Operation Delta Safe participated in the meeting, which was geared towards fostering closer cooperation.
