President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed Nigerian para-athletes as the true embodiment of the resilient Nigerian fighting spirit, acknowledging their contributions to the nation’s ongoing achievements on the global stage.
The President expressed these sentiments on Saturday during the official opening of the 3rd National Para Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Tinubu, who was represented by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised the para-athletes for their unwavering determination and resilience, referring to them as Nigeria’s genuine sporting heroes.
“You occupy a special place in my heart for all that you have accomplished for Nigeria in international competitions,” he stated.
“Time and again, you surpass limitations and face challenges head-on to bring home accolades for this country at the African Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games.
“I extend a warm welcome to all of you at this 3rd National Para Games in Abuja, and I assure you that the National Sports Commission has implemented all necessary arrangements to ensure this competition is both successful and memorable for everyone involved.”
Dikko mentioned that the event was organized in accordance with the Renewed Hope Initiative for the Nigerian Sports Economy (RHINSE agenda), aimed at providing Nigeria’s dedicated athletes with access to regular domestic competitions.
NSC Director General Bukola Olapade guaranteed that the Commission, through its Department of Grassroots and Para Sports, will persist in developing initiatives to enhance the standard and quality of para-sports in the nation.
The opening ceremony showcased a vibrant march past by participating states in their distinctive kits, cultural displays symbolizing the country’s unity in diversity, and performances by the Nigerian Military.
A total of 2,597 para-athletes from 31 states, including the FCT, are competing in 15 para-sports: Para Athletics, Para Cycling, Para Karate, Para Taekwondo, Para Powerlifting, Para Badminton, Para Table Tennis, Amputee Football, Para Volleyball, Para Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis, Para Shooting, Para Canoeing, and Para Soccer.
