Navy Operatives Save Seven in Bayelsa Boat Collision

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have rescued seven persons following a boat collision along the Ogboinbiri waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The Navy, in a statement by its spokesperson, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the incident involved a Tantita patrol boat and a wooden market boat. Upon receiving distress reports, personnel attached to Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Soroh were swiftly deployed to the scene.

According to the statement, the timely response of the naval team ensured the successful rescue and evacuation of the victims, who were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Efforts, however, are ongoing to locate other possible victims who may still be missing.

The Navy said the operation reflects its commitment to safeguarding lives on Nigeria’s waterways, in line with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbass, which prioritises both maritime security and humanitarian response.

It also highlighted a series of recent rescue efforts across the country. Earlier in March, naval personnel rescued 16 passengers during a sea robbery incident along the Ibaka–Calabar Channel. In December 2025, 20 crew members were saved from a burning vessel near Calabar, while 10 crew members were rescued from a distressed vessel in November 2025.

Additionally, 17 kidnapped victims were rescued in October 2025 within the Calabar waterways.

The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and protecting lives across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
