‎FG Presents Houses, National Honours To D’Tigress

The Nigerian Federal Government in Lyon-Villeurbanne, France, honored its commitment to D’Tigress on Monday 16th of March, following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship last August.

‎According to the recent report, it is claimed that the Nigerian basketball women’s team secured the Afrobasket title for the fifth consecutive time and the seventh overall after a tense 78-64 victory against Mali in the final.

‎Upon the team’s return to Lagos from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire with the Afrobasket trophy, President Bola Tinubu sanctioned a cash reward equivalent to $100,000 for each player, and $50,000 for the coach and each member of the technical team.

‎Additionally, the President bestowed upon each player and technical crew member the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), along with the allocation of one flat for each player, coach, and technical crew member.

‎Yesterday, prior to D’Tigress’ final Group A match against Germany on Tuesday during the ongoing 2026 FIBA World Cup qualifiers in France, the players and officials were pleasantly surprised to receive certificates for National honors and title documents for the houses allocated to them in Abuja, presented by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon Bukola Olopade, along with other senior Government officials.

‎The NSC Chairman remarked that the delivery of the documents to the players and officials was a timely fulfillment of promises made by a President who genuinely cares through both his words and actions.

‎He emphasized that Nigerian sports could not hope for a better leader than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during this pivotal time in the country’s sporting history.

‎Rena Wakama, the current head Coach of D’Tigress, conveyed her appreciation to the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his display of love and support, assuring the nation that more achievements are forthcoming from her team.

‎On the other hand, Amy Okonkwo, the team captain also expressed her gratitude to Mr. President on behalf of the entire team, while reaffirming their dedication to the cause.
