Nigeria’s Flamingos will target a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they face Mexico in the Round of 16 on Thursday in Salé, Morocco.
The encounter is scheduled for 4 p.m. Nigerian time, with both teams seeking to advance to the last eight of the tournament.
Nigeria head into the knockout tie with renewed confidence after defeating defending champions North Korea 3–1 in their final group match. The result followed a 2–1 defeat to Poland and a 2–0 victory over Puerto Rico.
Historical records offer encouragement for the Flamingos. Nigeria defeated Mexico 3–0 when the sides met in the group stage of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu and Aminat Yakubu scoring for the Nigerian side.
However, Mexico will present a difficult challenge after recovering from an opening defeat to Spain to beat Chile 3–1 and Australia 1–0 in their remaining group matches.
Captain Citlalli Reyes has been a key figure for the Mexican side, while Mia Urbano and Natalia Perez have also contributed to their attacking threat.
Tournament statistics supplied ahead of the encounter show Mexico with 56 shots, including 20 on target, compared with Nigeria’s 44 attempts and 15 on target. Reyes has registered 11 attempts, while Urbano and Perez have recorded 10 each. Nigeria’s Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Queen Joseph have managed eight shots apiece.
The figures underline the need for Nigeria to improve their finishing while maintaining defensive discipline against a side capable of creating scoring opportunities.
Set pieces could also provide the Flamingos with an important route to goal, but concentration and composure will be essential in a knockout match where a single result determines who progresses.
Nigeria’s history at the competition includes a bronze-medal finish in 2022, while Mexico claimed silver in 2018 and bronze in 2025. Both teams will be eager to extend their campaigns and move closer to the title.
Acting Nigeria Football Federation Secretary General, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, has also visited the team during training in Morocco, encouraging the players to remain focused after their impressive victory over North Korea.
With a quarter-final place at stake, the Flamingos will need to combine their attacking quality with defensive organisation to overcome Mexico and continue Nigeria’s campaign at Morocco 2026.
