The PILEX Center for Civic Education Initiative has condemned the recent move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as politically motivated and against the interest of the people.
The Coordinator of the Centre, Courage Nsirimovu, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Port Harcourt.
Nsirimovu said the organisation totally and without equivocation rejects the attempt by the House of Assembly to impeach the governor, noting that Rivers State presently needs unity and cohesion among the arms of government rather than actions capable of overheating the polity.
According to him, the impeachment move represents an abuse of constitutional process and does not reflect the will of the people of the state.
“At this time in Rivers State, what we need is unity and cooperation between the various arms of government. If unity cannot be achieved, there should at least be mutual respect so that democratic governance can thrive”.
Nsirimovu recalled that this is the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara, adding that previous attempts had contributed to political instability in the state.
“The first attempt in 2023 led to the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly. There was another attempt last year, and now again this year. This is beginning to look like an abuse of constitutional process,” he said.
He questioned whether the lawmakers had consulted their constituents before embarking on the impeachment process, insisting that such a critical decision must reflect the will of the people.
The PILEX Coordinator further accused external political interests of influencing the move, stressing that it was not driven by concern for the welfare of Rivers people.
“This is not born out of love for the people of Rivers State. It is not in their interest. It is politically motivated, and the people of Rivers State reject it,” he said.
Nsirimovu warned that the impeachment attempt could plunge the state into another round of political crisis and instability, urging all parties to exercise restraint and allow democratic governance to prevail.
