Ogoni Clean-up Funds: Fabeke Testifies Before Reps Committee

The Leader of the Ogoni Liberation Initiative, Dr Douglas Fabeke, has appeared before the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the Mismanagement of Oil Spill Clean-up Funds in the Niger Delta to present evidence on alleged financial misconduct linked to the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) and the continued hardship faced by communities in Ogoniland.

Dr Fabeke appeared before the committee on December 18, 2025, at the National Assembly, Abuja, where he submitted what he described as verifiable information and documentary evidence to aid the committee’s investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds earmarked for the Ogoni clean-up exercise.According to him, his appearance generated significant public interest, revealing that he received over 635 messages within 24 hours of the hearing.

He explained that his decision to engage with the committee was driven solely by a desire to set the record straight, promote accountability and protect the interests of Ogoni communities, rather than for any personal gain.

Dr Fabeke disclosed that he presented documents, including bank account details and transaction records, allegedly showing financial transactions amounting to ₦612 billion, noting that a second batch of evidence involving a similar sum would be submitted to the committee at a later date.

He expressed confidence in the transparency and seriousness of the ad-hoc committee, saying its findings would help bring justice and meaningful change to communities that have endured decades of environmental degradation and neglect.

The Ogoni activist also said he held consultations with several leaders in Abuja and submitted a formal letter to the office of the lawmaker representing Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, drawing attention to the abandoned Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology in Andoni, and calling for collaborative efforts to revive the institution.

Dr Fabeke noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shown commitment to addressing the suffering of the Ogoni people and other Niger Delta communities, urging the public to trust the committee’s work as investigations continue.
