WHO Warns Against Deepened Global Health Crisis

As the world marks Universal Health Coverage Day, December 12th 2025, a stark reality check reveals that over half of the global population remains deprived of essential health services, forcing one in four individuals to make impossible choices between healthcare and basic necessities like food and education. The devastating impact of unaffordable health costs is palpable, with households facing financial ruin, plunging millions into poverty, and undermining decades of progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The World Health Organization (WHO) is sounding the alarm, urging governments to take urgent action to implement financial protection measures and eliminate out-of-pocket health costs, particularly for vulnerable populations, including those with low incomes or chronic conditions. “Health for all is not just a moral imperative, but an economic necessity,” says WHO. “Investing in Universal Health Coverage is investing in resilient, productive, and prosperous communities.

“The devastating impact of unaffordable health costs is a stain on humanity, and it is imperative that we work together to eliminate financial barriers and ensure that everyone, everywhere has access to quality healthcare. The WHO’s plea for urgent action must be heeded, and it is only by working together that we can achieve the promise of Universal Health Coverage and build a healthier, more equitable world for all.

As the global community rallies behind the UHC movement, the message is clear: it’s time for leaders to turn commitments into concrete action, ensuring that quality healthcare is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. The clock is ticking – will the world act?.
