Rivers PDP Rejects Wike’s Expulsion

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed as laughable and illegal the purported expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief (Barr) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and other members by a faction claiming to be the party’s national leadership.

In a statement issued on Thursday 4 December 2025 by the State Publicity Secretary, Dr Kenneth Yowika, the chapter described the group that announced the expulsions as “an undemocratic band of expelled politicians” operating from an unconstitutional convention held in Ibadan.

The statement cited two separate Federal High Court judgments that invalidated the convention. Justice James Omotosho halted the exercise for failing to comply with party rules, particularly the requirement for designated officials to sign the convention notice before submission to INEC.

Justice Peter Lifu, in a suit filed by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, also restrained the convention, noting Lamido was denied nomination forms to contest the national chairmanship position.

Rivers PDP commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for refusing to monitor the “illegal” gathering, insisting that any decision emanating from it—including the expulsion of Wike and his allies—lacked legal backing.

“An illegal, undemocratic and unconstitutional group cannot expel anyone from a party they have no legitimate right to lead,” the statement read, adding that the authentic National Working Committee under Acting National Chairman Alhaji Muhammad Abdulrahman had already expelled the factional leaders.

The chapter while describing the development as frustration pushing the faction into self-destruction urged the party faithful to ignore “irresponsible chants by undemocratic elements” and await directives from the recognised national leadership and the Board of Trustees chaired by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.
