The Rivers State Government has formally announced its readiness to serve as the host state for the upcoming Nigeria Women’s Premier League (NWFL) Super 6 tournament concluding the 2025/2026 season.
This move is widely regarded as a substantial commitment to advancing women’s football both within the state and nationally.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday after Commissioner for Sports, Chris Green, attended NWFL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Port Harcourt.

Green, who represented Governor Siminalayi Fubara, lauded the league management for selecting Rivers State as the first-ever host of the championship.
Green assured stakeholders of the state’s deep commitment to supporting the growth of women’s football.
He stressed that Rivers State intends not just to host, but to deliver a “world-class Super 6 championship” upon the season’s conclusion.
He emphasised that women’s football is an essential element of Nigeria’s sporting identity and called for unified collaboration among all stakeholders to guarantee the game’s enduring growth and viability.
Representing the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, the Head of Women’s Football at the Federation, Aisha Falode, acknowledged the NWFL board’s dedication to managing the league.
Falode pledged the NFF’s support in tackling the recurring issue of calendar inconsistencies that have plagued the competition.
Speaking on behalf of the NFF President, Falode appealed to the women’s league body to foster unity and build a brand robust enough to draw increased corporate investment into the sport.
The AGM served as a crucial gathering for football administrators, club owners, player representatives, and other vital stakeholders, all of whom reaffirmed their mutual dedication to promoting women’s football development in Nigeria.
Rivers Angels FC’s first fixture will be an away match against Castmong Ladies in Ogun State.
Group A features a mix of established powerhouses and ambitious challengers.
The ten teams drawn into Group A are Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, Edo Queens, Adamawa Queens, Pacesetter Queens, Heartland Queens, Ekiti Queens, Naija Ratels, Ibom Angels, and Castmong Ladies.
The teams will compete through the group stage to advance to the Super Six competition later in the season.
Major highlights discussed include a review of the activities and performance of the recently concluded 2024/2025 season, which saw Bayelsa Queens clinch a record sixth Premiership title.
The 2025/2026 season will feature an expanded top-flight, welcoming promoted Premiership clubs: Sunshine Queens (Ondo), Castmog Ladies (Ogun), Ahudiyannem Queens (Abia), and Imo Striker Queens (Imo), bringing the total number of top-flight teams to 20.
In the Championship, new additions include Dreamstar Ladies (returnees), Rangers Women (debutants), Rosaria Victrix (debutants), and Solo Wonders (debutants).
