‘I No Longer Feel Safe Returning to School,’ Says Rivers Student

A 14-year-old student of Community Secondary School, Okoroagu, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, has expressed fear of returning to class after allegedly narrowly escaping death when part of his classroom roof collapsed during a downpour.

The student, identified as Fabian Chinda, was among several pupils in the senior secondary section when the incident occurred on October 4.

According to The Port City News (TPCN) earlier report, it was noted that some students of Community Secondary School, Okoroagu, sustained injuries after a dilapidated roof collapsed.

Further revelation disclosed that the roof of one of the dilapidated classrooms caved in shortly after a teacher had stepped out, sending students running for safety.

Fabian, who sustained minor injuries, told reporters that the experience left him traumatised. He said he often stays outside during lessons for fear that another section of the building might collapse.

Parents and community leaders have appealed to the Rivers State Government to renovate the school and provide a safe learning environment urgently.

They warned that continued neglect could expose students to greater risks and disrupt academic activities.

As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Education had yet to comment on the situation.
