YEAC-Nigeria, Partners Launch App to Monitor Oil Spills in Niger Delta

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), in collaboration with Tech4Rural, a Yenagoa-based non-governmental organization, has developed an innovative mobile application designed to monitor, detect, document, and report crude oil spills across the Niger Delta region.

The App, named CoMaPeo, was developed in partnership with Awana Digital, based in San Francisco, California, USA. After months of test-running and refinement, the App is now set for official launch at an event themed “Niger Delta: Oiled and Abandoned”, organized by Tech4Rural in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The event will feature Rev. (Dr.) Nnimmo Bassey, Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), as keynote speaker, while Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, will serve as one of the panelists. A major highlight will be the screening and premiere of a documentary addressing the neglect and environmental degradation of the Niger Delta, alongside the unveiling of the CoMaPeo App.

Dr. Fyneface disclosed in Port Harcourt that YEAC-Nigeria will subsequently hold a follow-up event later in October, where technical details of CoMaPeo will be unveiled. Members of YEAC’s Crude Oil Spill Alert System (COSAS), volunteers, and interested stakeholders will also receive hands-on training on using the App for real-time oil spill tracking.

He explained that although CoMaPeo is currently available for download on the Google Play Store, its core features for oil spill monitoring, documentation, and reporting are restricted to trained and authorized users to ensure data integrity and accuracy.

Dr. Fyneface commended Jethro Chris, Executive Director of Tech4Rural, for initiating and collaborating on the project, describing it as an important addition to YEAC’s extensive list of environmental advocacy and intervention programs.

The CoMaPeo App complements other YEAC-Nigeria initiatives such as the One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters, Crude Oil Spill Alert System (COSAS), Network on Organized Crime in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea (NOCINAG), and the Presidential Artisanal Crude Oil Refining Development Initiative (PACORDI). Others include YEAC’s advocacy for modular refineries, renewable energy projects like the Solar Mini-Grid Ecotricity Facility, and national dialogues on organized crime and environmental security in the Gulf of Guinea.

According to Dr. Fyneface, these efforts collectively aim to curb pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, artisanal refining, and environmental pollution while promoting sustainable livelihoods and environmental justice in the Niger Delta.
