Police, Media Urged to Collaborate In Combating Crime

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 16, which comprises both Rivers and Bayelsa States, AIG Johnson Adenola has called for a good working relationship between the police and the media to ensure a crime-free society.

AIG Adenola made the call when members of the United Correspondents Chapel, (UCC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council paid him a courtesy visit, in his office in Yenagoa noted that policing the two states cannot be done without a robust and strategic partnership with the media.

The AIG who commended members of UCC for expressing thier readiness to partner the police with a view to achieving a crime-free society as a whole also called on other chapels to emulate UCC. According to him, the media plays a critical role in crime prevention because of the fact that they are known as the custodian of critical information which he said the police needed in combating crime.

He further stated, that such relevant information enables the police go after criminals thereby reducing crimes and criminalities to the bear minimum, stressing that all inclusive policing is highly essential for adequate security of lives and property.

Earlier, the Chairman of UCC, Comrade Amgbare Ekankumo, noted that the courtesy visit was aimed at deepening and strengthening the already working relationship between the media and the police in the fight against crime for the overall benefits of mankind.

According to him, ” journalists are constitutionally entrusted with the responsibility of informing, educating and enlightening the public through adequate and timely dissemination of news nothing that security and crime free society is a collective responsibility that transcends law enforcement agencies and the undeniable link between the media and the police needs to be consciously upheld for the overall development of the society.

He however noted that the AIG’s “distinguished career marked by professionalism, integrity, excellence and reform driven policies are testaments to the commitment to combat crime and criminality in the zone”, re-affirming the commitment of members of UCC to uphold professionalism, fairness and balanced reportage in the collective fight against crime in the society.
