Rivers Government To Offer Free Hydrocele Surgeries In Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has announced a three-day free medical surgery programme for adult men suffering from hydrocele, in partnership with Christian Blind Mission.

According to the Director of Medical Services at the Ministry, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, the programme will run from September 17 to 19, 2025, at Kelsey Harrison Hospital, Mile One Diobu, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Dr. Wachukwu explained that hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac around the testicle that causes scrotal swelling. While common among infants due to developmental reasons, adults usually develop the condition as a result of injury or infection.

He warned that untreated hydrocele could damage reproductive organs.

He further noted that many men delay or avoid treatment due to financial constraints and cultural beliefs that link the condition to spiritual causes.

“When we look at why men die with hydrocele, it can be tied to the fear of financial involvement in the treatment or surgery. Patients also neglect medical treatment because of traditional beliefs of spiritual invocation or a spell,” he said.

The Ministry urged residents to take advantage of the free programme and called on citizens to adopt routine health checks to prevent avoidable health complications.
