To reduce maternal deaths and improve women’s health outcomes across Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has introduced a new flagship programme called RenewHER.
The initiative was officially unveiled at a ceremony in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with Vice President Kashim Shettima standing in for the president.
According to a statement shared on Friday by presidential aide Stanley Nkwocha, Tinubu described the project as a “national priority” and a benchmark for measuring Nigeria’s welfare and development.
Central to the plan is the establishment of a Presidential focal office on women’s health.

This office will coordinate with the Federal Ministry of Health, the State-Wide Approach Coordination Office (SWAp), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum to embed women’s health priorities into government action at every level.
One of the standout features of RenewHER is the creation of an AI-driven National Women’s Health Digital Hub.
The hub is expected to deliver geo-targeted campaigns on maternal survival, adolescent health, and preventive care, while also linking healthcare to entrepreneurship opportunities.
Tinubu noted that this integration will not only safeguard women’s lives but also drive wider economic growth.
Calling maternal mortality “a national shame we must confront together,” the president pledged to ensure that interventions under RenewHER translate into practical improvements in communities.
In support, the Chairperson of the Governors’ Spouses Forum and First Lady of Kwara State, Olufolake AbdulRazaq, said the forum would collaborate with state governments and the private sector to ensure the programme’s success.
Adanna Steinacker, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, described the initiative as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning women’s health at the centre of governance.
The project has also received international endorsement. Beatrice Eyong, UN Women’s Country Representative to Nigeria, commended RenewHER as a bold step that redefines women’s health as a driver of socio-economic progress. She reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian government to improve access and dignity for women nationwide.
