Amaechi Declares 2027 ADC Presidential Bid

On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, former Nigerian Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi announced his plans to run in the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking to journalists in Kano State after meeting with a group of local traders, Amaechi expressed strong confidence in his candidacy and vowed to stay in the race no matter what. He emphasised that he would not withdraw for any other contender, calling for a fair and open primary process to let party members decide the nominee.

Amaechi, who previously served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and later as transportation minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari until 2022, highlighted his extensive experience in public service. He argued that his background makes him one of the most prepared candidates to lead Nigeria, pointing out his southern roots as a way to promote national unity without regional conflicts. “Among all those eyeing the presidency, including the current leader, who is more ready than me?” he asked rhetorically during the announcement. He believes his track record in governance positions him well to address the country’s challenges.

The declaration comes amid growing discontent with the administration of President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023. Amaechi did not hold back in his criticism, stating that Nigerians across all regions are facing severe hardships and unhappiness under the current government. He claimed that even people in his home state of Rivers and the broader southern region are struggling, with widespread suffering evident nationwide. “No one is content right now—not in Rivers, not in the South, and certainly not elsewhere,” he said. He accused the administration of favouring only a small circle of allies with political appointments, leaving many others sidelined and frustrated.

Amaechi’s move to the ADC marks a shift from his previous affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he had contested the 2023 presidential primary but lost to Tinubu. He chose the ADC, a smaller opposition party, as his new platform, stressing the importance of internal democracy within it. When questioned about potential zoning arrangements that might favour candidates from certain regions, Amaechi deferred to the party’s leadership but affirmed his commitment to compete fully. “I’ll participate in the ADC primary, and with luck, win it to challenge Tinubu in 2027,” he declared. He added that a transparent contest would strengthen the party overall.

Addressing doubts about his political influence in Rivers State, Amaechi dismissed suggestions that it has diminished, particularly due to the rise of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a former governor of Rivers. He pointed to a recent ADC event in the state on an unspecified date in August 2025, where large crowds gathered without any incentives. “The massive turnout from the airport to the venue shows where the people’s loyalties lie,” he noted, countering claims of waning support.

This announcement adds to the early buzz surrounding the 2027 elections, with several figures already positioning themselves for the race. Amaechi’s bold stance signals his determination to return to the national stage, potentially setting up a high-stakes contest against Tinubu if he secures the ADC nomination. As Nigeria grapples with economic pressures, including inflation and insecurity, candidates like Amaechi are framing their campaigns around promises of relief and better governance. Political analysts suggest that his entry could fragment opposition votes or energise voters seeking alternatives to the ruling party. For now, Amaechi remains focused on building momentum within the ADC, urging Nigerians to demand credible elections regardless of the government’s intentions.
