Nigerian music sensation Niniola has offered a poignant and deeply personal glimpse into the profound and lasting impact of her father’s tragic death. In a recent interview, the acclaimed singer and songwriter opened up about the traumatic event that shaped her childhood, an experience she describes as one she will never be able to forget.

The incident, which occurred on January 8, 1995, in Lagos, was one of brutal violence. Her father, retired General Apata, was assassinated by a group of armed assailants. The tragedy was compounded by its horrifying context, as the murder was carried out in the family home directly in front of his wife and young children, searing the memory into their minds forever.

While speaking with Jay On Air, Niniola recounted the profound personal connection she shared with her father, which made the loss even more devastating. She revealed the enduring nature of her grief, explaining that the passage of time has not dulled the pain of that day.

“I was in the house when my dad was murdered. And I was his favourite child so you can imagine. Till today, I’m not over it. I can never get over it. I was very young when it happened. I don’t remember my exact age then but it wasn’t a good memory,” she said.
