UK Government Hails Nigeria’s Economic Reforms as First Lady Hosts British High Commissioner

The United Kingdom has commended the economic and trade policies of President Bola Tinubu, describing them as “bold, brave, and positive.”

This was stated by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, during a visit to First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in Abuja.

Montgomery noted that the UK government observes significant potential in the Nigerian economy due to the “difficult but necessary reforms” enacted by Tinubu. He said these reforms have strengthened the trade partnership between the two nations.

The High Commissioner also expressed admiration for Mrs Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), acknowledging its role in empowering women in key sectors like education, health, and humanitarian services.

During the meeting, Montgomery also mentioned the UK government’s interest in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process and the proposal for special seats for women in the National Assembly.

However, Mrs Tinubu assured the British delegation that the government and her RHI, which aligns with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, would continue to address the challenges faced by Nigerians.

She emphasised the RHI’s focus on empowering women in the informal sector, stating, “These are the ones we are touching their lives directly.”

She agreed that the number of women in the National Assembly is declining and pledged to support efforts to increase their representation.

Mrs Tinubu underscored the importance of ensuring that women are educated to choose the right representatives who can effectively serve them.

The British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, was also part of the visiting team.
