Chelsea Defender To Play For Nigeria

Adarabioyo

Chelsea’s towering centre-back, Tosin Adarabioyo, is reportedly on the verge of committing his international future to Nigeria, turning his back on England, where he was born and raised. The 26-year-old, whose parents hail from Nigeria, has been a standout in England’s youth setups, featuring for the Three Lions at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, and Under-19 levels. However, with no senior cap from England to tie him down, the door remains wide open for a switch to Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Adarabioyo, born in Manchester to Nigerian parents, has long been on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). While at Fulham, he was included on the NFF’s watchlist, though he initially appeared hesitant to commit, with many believing his heart was set on representing England. Despite denying claims of outright rejecting Nigeria’s advances in the past, the defender has now hinted he’s close to making a definitive choice about his international allegiance.

Sources indicate that a pivotal moment came during Adarabioyo’s first-ever visit to Nigeria in July 2025. During the trip, he held discussions with high-ranking government officials and NFF representatives, which may have swayed his decision toward embracing his Nigerian heritage. Beyond official meetings, he also organised a grassroots football tournament, a meaningful gesture to connect with local communities and strengthen his ties to the country. Reflecting on the visit, Adarabioyo remarked, “Playing for Nigeria is something I’m still considering. It’s been a topic for years since I turned professional. Hopefully, a decision will come soon, and we’ll see what happens.”

The NFF is eager to secure Adarabioyo’s services as soon as possible, though bureaucratic hurdles, such as processing necessary documentation, might delay his debut beyond the September 2025 international window. His potential inclusion in the Super Eagles squad would bolster Nigeria’s defensive ranks, adding a player who has proven his quality in the Premier League and contributed to Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup victory in the United States earlier this year.

If Adarabioyo completes the switch, he’ll follow in the footsteps of other dual-heritage stars like Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, and Ola Aina, who also represented England at youth levels before pledging allegiance to Nigeria at the senior stage. His decision would mark a significant moment for the Super Eagles, who are looking to fortify their squad for upcoming international challenges.
