Morris Monye Criticises $100,000 Reward for Super Falcons, Cites Economic Hardship

Nigerian social commentator, Morris Monye, has sparked widespread discussion after criticising the $100,000 reward promised to each Super Falcons player, describing it as excessive given the country’s current economic challenges.

‎In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Monye stated that while the gesture is admirable, it may not reflect the realities facing millions of Nigerians. He argued that with the country grappling with poverty, inflation, and rising debt, such large sums of money should be spent with greater caution.

‎“With the widespread poverty and excessive borrowing we are doing, the $100,000 reward money for each Super Falcons player is a bit excessive,” he wrote.

‎Monye clarified that he does not oppose rewarding the team, but believes national priorities need a rethink. He pointed out that the average Nigerian is struggling to meet basic needs, while significant resources are being allocated to a select few.

‎“The idea behind the reward money is fantastic, but we can’t be borrowing money every time while the average man in Nigeria is dying in hunger and we are splashing money for a select few,” he added.

‎He also referenced a quote by the late African revolutionary Thomas Sankara: “It’s better for everyone to drink clean water than a select few to drink Champagne.”

‎Monye’s comments have drawn mixed reactions. While some Nigerians support his views on prioritising public welfare and sustainable governance, others insist the Super Falcons deserve full recognition and financial compensation for their hard work and national representation.
