The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public servants for six months, beginning in November 2026, to ease the impact of rising living costs.
The approval followed a conciliation meeting between the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27.
The government also approved payment of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears, effective from May 1, 2026, in three equal monthly instalments starting in November.
However, both parties failed to agree on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage, but resolved to immediately establish a tripartite Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee comprising government, labour and employers’ representatives.
The resolutions were contained in a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of the Federal Government and the NLC.

NLC Assistant Secretary-General, Chris Onyeka, described the meeting as productive but said the outcome fell short of labour’s expectations.
For health workers, the government agreed to clear 19 months of outstanding allowance arrears within three months, beginning in December 2026.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission was also given three weeks to complete its assessment of the cost implications of a proposed adjustment to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).
Meanwhile, the payment of hazard allowances to agricultural officers remains subject to verification of beneficiaries and costs, while the question of tax relief for workers will be referred to the National Executive Council for consideration.
The memorandum urged state and local governments to participate in the welfare interventions and directed both parties to reconvene after one month to review implementation.
Although the agreement provides immediate financial support for workers, key issues, including the minimum wage implementation date and other outstanding allowances, remain unresolved.
