The Rivers State Government has distributed food and non-food items to residents affected by flooding in Khana and Gokana Local Government Areas to ease their hardship.
The items were presented to representatives of the two councils at the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder base in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.
The Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, said the intervention was part of efforts to support families affected by the disaster.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, she explained that the distribution was being coordinated with local government chairmen, community leaders and Community Development Committees to ensure that the most vulnerable residents benefited.

Professor Odu described the relief materials as a temporary measure, adding that the government was pursuing lasting solutions to the recurring flooding problem.
She also urged residents to avoid blocking drainage channels and waterways, noting that human activities, alongside natural factors such as the state’s topography, contributed to flooding.
The Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Thomas Bariere, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Daniel Doorka, assured residents that the items would reach those most affected. He thanked Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Deputy Governor for the intervention.
Similarly, the Gokana Council Chairman, Hon. Confidence Yima Deko, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Dugbor Baritoesan, commended the state government for supporting flood victims and addressing the challenges facing affected communities.
