The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, where Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America will be able to sit for the exam starting in 2027. The announcement came via the board’s official social media platforms, following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
According to JAMB, the proposed centre will make it easier for eligible Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, to take the UTME without having to travel back to Nigeria solely for the examination.

The board described the initiative as part of its broader effort to “take Nigerian tertiary education to the world,” saying it would also help strengthen ties between Nigerians abroad and the country’s education system.
JAMB said the Ottawa centre would offer greater opportunities to showcase Nigerian tertiary education on the international stage and bring the UTME closer to Nigerians living in Canada. “For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board stated, adding that it is working toward launching the centre’s operations in 2027.
The board further explained that the initiative would provide Nigerians in Canada and across North America with easier access to the exam, describing it as a significant opportunity to deepen the connection between the Nigerian diaspora and the country’s tertiary education system, while reducing barriers for those seeking admission into Nigerian institutions.
