Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has expressed concern over the limited time available to prepare his team for Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau.
Nigeria will face the Djurtus at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau as both teams look to maintain their winning starts in Group L.
The Super Eagles opened their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo, while Guinea-Bissau recorded a 2-0 away win against Tanzania.
Following the Madagascar match, the Nigerian team held a recovery session on Saturday before returning to training on Sunday ahead of their trip to Bissau.
The players also had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the match venue during their final training session on Monday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Chelle admitted that the FIFA international window leaves little room for tactical preparation.
“We didn’t have enough training sessions to work a lot. This is the problem with this kind of FIFA window. You have only one or two training sessions to prepare,” Chelle said.
“Subsequently, you have one or two training sessions designated for recovery, and you must travel.
“The most important thing is that we reviewed the previous match and carried out a thorough analysis. If you look at the statistics, you can say we deserved to beat Madagascar.
“However, the performance was not particularly impressive. We conceded an early goal and the game was very difficult for us.”
The Malian tactician also revealed concerns over the fitness of striker George Ilenikhena ahead of the encounter.
According to Chelle, at least two other players will undergo late fitness assessments before a final decision is made on their availability.
Nigeria currently occupy second position in Group L, level on three points with leaders Guinea-Bissau.
A victory in Bissau would move the Super Eagles to the top of the standings and strengthen their hopes of securing qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
