The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is concluding consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the formal inauguration and unveiling of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for the forthcoming general elections.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director. The party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have met several times with the National Leader, Seriake Dickson, and other members of the NDC’s national leadership.
The consultations are expected to pave the way for the final composition of the campaign council. The party said it had authorised Obi and Kwankwaso to nominate some of the major officials who will coordinate the campaign, subject to consultation with the NDC.
The positions include Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General for the North, Campaign Spokesperson and Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.
The NDC also outlined how campaign finances would be managed, saying the Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director nominated by the candidates would work alongside the party’s National Treasurer.
It said the arrangement was intended to promote transparency and accountability in the handling of campaign funds and ensure compliance with the financial reporting requirements of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the Electoral Act.
The party said it had prepared a detailed structure for the campaign council in August and forwarded it to Messrs Obi and Kwankwaso for their consideration. It added that the structure also incorporated recommendations from stakeholders across the party.
The inauguration of the council was initially planned for the first week of September but was postponed because of the presidential candidate’s travel schedule. The NDC said the unveiling would take place once the two candidates had concluded their review and submitted their inputs.
The party also appealed to its candidates and support groups to avoid actions that could create divisions within its ranks ahead of the elections. The NDC urged all those involved in the campaign to remain focused on the election, stressing that there was no internal battle to fight within the party.
It identified the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as its main political opponent and reminded candidates that they were contesting under the NDC platform. The party therefore called on its candidates and supporters to work together towards a common electoral objective rather than pursue individual interests.
The NDC also directed its State and Local Government Area Chairmen to begin meetings with candidates and other stakeholders to harmonise and verify the list of party agents for the general elections.
The directive, which the party said was issued in line with the Electoral Act 2026, requires the chairmen to compile separate lists of agents for the different categories of elections. One list will cover the National Assembly elections, while the second will cover the governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
The party leadership will review and ratify the lists, with the presidential and vice-presidential candidates also expected to participate in the process before the selected agents undergo training.
The NDC said the entire process must be completed and the lists submitted within two weeks of the directive. A committee set up to supervise the selection and processing of the party agents is headed by Babatunde Alli, the Deputy National Chairman (South).
Vin Martin Ilo is the committee’s secretary. Other members are Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura and the National Vice Chairmen representing the six geopolitical zones.
