The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council in Rivers State has reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to boost National Identity Number (NIN) registration across the area.
The commitment was made during a strategic meeting between top officials of the council and a high-powered NIMC delegation from Rivers State at the council secretariat in Rumuodumaya on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Representing the Council Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, the Vice Chairman, Dr. Joyce Nyeche, assured the NIMC team that their requests would be promptly forwarded to the chairman for immediate attention.
Dr. Nyeche welcomed the commission’s outreach programme, describing it as a timely move that would make identity registration services more accessible to residents.
She stressed that the NIN has become indispensable in modern Nigeria, serving as a gateway to essential government and private sector services.

“The importance of having a National Identity Number cannot be overemphasised,” Dr. Nyeche said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Rivers State Coordinator of NIMC, Mr. Amaga David Akawu, said the commission is intensifying efforts to reach every community in the state, including the most remote areas, to ensure no eligible person is left out of the national database.
Mr. Akawu highlighted the growing significance of the NIN for everyday transactions, including opening bank accounts, securing loans, buying property, and conducting various official businesses.
He appealed to the Obio/Akpor Council to support the NIMC office within the council by providing essential office furniture, appliances, chairs, logistics, and financial assistance to improve service delivery to the people.
