Ademola Lookman has come under criticism following Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
Spanish pundit and Atlético insider Jesús Colino questioned the Nigerian forward’s impact after he came off the bench in Tuesday’s encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
Bayern secured the victory with two second-half goals. Lennart Karl opened the scoring in the 54th minute before Konrad Laimer doubled the advantage in the 74th minute.
Lookman was introduced in the 56th minute, replacing Alexander Sørloth, as Atlético manager Diego Simeone sought to improve his side’s attacking threat.
The Super Eagles forward struggled to make a significant impact during his 34-minute appearance. He recorded 20 touches and failed to register a shot on target.
Colino was particularly unimpressed with the Nigerian’s display, questioning his confidence and ability to take on Bayern’s defenders.
In his player ratings for Spanish newspaper AS, Colino wrote: “Lacking confidence, he couldn’t manage a single dribble and barely contributed in a few runs down the left.”
Lookman’s performance came after some positive contributions in the competition, including a goal against Manchester United and an assist in Atlético’s draw with Stuttgart.
Despite the criticism, the Nigerian forward will look to regain his form and strengthen his position in Atlético’s attacking options as the season continues.
