The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections by seeking deeper collaboration with the United Kingdom in the areas of election security, technology, cybersecurity and voter education.
The call was made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. According to the electoral body, stronger international cooperation will help improve the credibility, transparency and efficiency of future elections.
Amupitan noted that technology has become a vital component of modern elections, making it necessary for INEC to strengthen its systems against cyber threats while expanding voter education initiatives. He stressed that the commission is committed to adopting global best practices that will enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The INEC chairman also highlighted the importance of continued support from development partners in improving electoral logistics, securing digital infrastructure and building the capacity of election officials. He explained that collaboration with the UK would contribute significantly to safeguarding election technologies and ensuring the successful conduct of the 2027 polls.
In response, Montgomery reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic development. He praised the longstanding relationship between both countries and expressed the UK’s readiness to continue assisting INEC through technical expertise, capacity building and knowledge sharing.
The discussions covered strategies for strengthening cybersecurity, improving election administration, promoting voter participation and enhancing the resilience of electoral technology against emerging threats. Both sides acknowledged the growing role of digital innovation in electoral management and the need to protect democratic institutions from cyber risks and misinformation.
The meeting forms part of INEC’s broader preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission seeking strategic partnerships that will strengthen election integrity, improve operational efficiency and ensure Nigerians participate in a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process.
