President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Army and strengthening Nigeria’s defence industry to enhance national security and address emerging threats.
The President made the pledge in a message delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration held on Monday at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue investing in modern military capabilities to ensure the Nigerian Army remains equipped to tackle contemporary security challenges while improving its operational readiness.
He also pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s defence manufacturing capacity through the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), describing indigenous defence production as vital to national security and economic development.
The President welcomed the establishment of the African Armed Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic platform for deepening defence diplomacy, promoting knowledge sharing and strengthening collaboration among African militaries.
According to him, the partnership between the Nigerian Army and Great Minds Event Management underscores the growing role of public-private collaboration in advancing defence innovation and indigenous military production.
Tinubu assured that his administration would continue supporting research, innovation and capacity building to develop sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.
He described the Nigerian Armed Forces as one of Africa’s finest institutions, commending officers and soldiers for their professionalism, discipline and contributions to both national and international peacekeeping efforts.
Speaking on the theme of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the President said it reflected the enduring bond between the military and the Nigerian people.
He paid tribute to fallen military personnel, assuring their families that their sacrifices would never be forgotten, while also acknowledging the contributions of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies to national security.
Tinubu further called for stronger cooperation among African nations in intelligence sharing, border security, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, climate security and the application of artificial intelligence in modern defence operations.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the operational capabilities and combat readiness of the Armed Forces through strategic investments and emerging technologies.
In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, improved operational capacity and commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity and security.
Fubara stressed that greater attention should be given to the welfare of military personnel, noting that improved welfare packages would further motivate officers and soldiers to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively.
He said any government seeking enhanced national security must prioritise the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, whose service often comes with enormous personal sacrifices.
The governor also thanked the Army leadership for selecting Rivers State to host the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, describing the decision as a strong endorsement of the prevailing peace and stability in the state.
According to him, the successful hosting of the event had dispelled negative perceptions about insecurity in Rivers State, demonstrating confidence in the state’s security architecture.
Fubara praised the military parade and tactical demonstrations, saying they reflected the Nigerian Army’s growing professionalism, technological advancement and improved manpower development.
He also commended President Tinubu for supporting the Army through investments aimed at strengthening its operational effectiveness and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all security agencies in Rivers State.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, commended President Tinubu for his sustained support in enhancing the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army and strengthening national defence.
He also appreciated Governor Fubara for providing a peaceful environment and continued support for military operations in Rivers State.
Oluyede said the annual Nigerian Army Day Celebration honours the sacrifices, resilience and enduring legacy of the Army while reaffirming its commitment to defending the nation against terrorism, insurgency and other evolving security threats.
