The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe has revealed plans to designed,stabilise and revamp the country’s electricity sector by urging all stakeholders to collaborate and resolve the issues in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Addressing the second quarterly meeting of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders which was organised by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Abuja, he stated that only a collective effort will bring about sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
According to him, the issues in the country’s electricity sector cannot be sorted out by the government alone and called on all relevant parties to do their part.
The minister emphasized the need to ensure protection of power infrastructure as vandalism, stealing of energy, and assault on electricity assets pose serious challenges to the economic growth of the nation.
The minister went further to explain that there is concerted effort to ensure improvement in the national grid and transmission infrastructure with the aim of addressing the weak areas in provision of power.
The minister also identified measures to increase deployment of electricity meters across the nation to minimize the estimated bills and increase efficiency.
He explained that the government is developing a tariff structure that will cater for vulnerable consumers but at the same time provide a conducive atmosphere for investors.
Concerning the market reforms, the minister emphasized the need for increased transparency in payment processes since confidence in electricity market can only be achieved through proper financial reporting.
He further explained that the ministry is planning to publish scorecard for electricity generation and distribution companies.
In conclusion, Tegbe promised to ensure transparency, fast and accountable leadership during the period of his tenure.
This will entail removal of bureaucracy and accountability of all players in the power sector of Nigeria
