The Gokana 10th Legislative Council on Thursday July 2, 2026 conducted a public hearing on five significant bills aimed at boosting governance, enhancing public welfare, and tackling pressing social challenges in the local government area.
The session drew a large turnout of stakeholders, traditional rulers, government functionaries, and ordinary residents, who actively made inputs and recommendations on the proposed legislations before they are passed into law.
The bills under consideration are:
Gokana LGA Internal Revenue Mobilization Committee (Establishment) Bill, 2026.
Gokana LGA Prohibition of Scavenging and Vandalism of Private and Public Infrastructure Bill, 2025.
Gokana LGA Child Education Rights and Primary Education Bill, 2026.
Gokana LGA Prevention and Prohibition of Drug Abuse, Illegal Sales and Other Related Matters Bill, 2025.
Gokana LGA Compulsory Registration of Pregnant Women for Maternal Healthcare Bill, 2025.
According to the council Chairman, Sir Confidence Dekor, the legislators exhibited real commitment to the tenets of democracy and the proposed laws are designed to strengthen internally generated revenue, safeguard public and private infrastructure from destruction, ensure access to quality education for children, curb the growing menace of drug abuse, and improve maternal healthcare services across Gokana.
He charged those present at the public hearing to make valuable contributions and inputs to ensure good laws are made for the general good of the people of Gokana.
While declaring the public hearing open, the Leader of Gokana 10th Legislative Assembly, Hon. Dr. John Lebura Barikor said the event was a crucial step in legislative processes geared towards ensuring that laws enjoy broad acceptance and effectiveness in addressing the developmental priorities of the area.
