-Tracks 32 Million Learners, Says Alausa
The Federal Government says it is building one of the largest education data systems in Africa, with more than 32 million learners now captured under its Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS).
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known on Tuesday during his keynote address at the 2026 DHIS2 Annual Conference in Oslo, Norway, where he highlighted Nigeria’s growing use of data in education planning and management.
Alausa said the DNEMIS platform, developed in collaboration with UNICEF, is helping the government generate reliable data on schools and learners across the country to support decision-making in the education sector.
According to him, the system currently captures data from 32 million learners across 204,048 schools in all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local government areas.
He said the platform enables the government to identify gaps in infrastructure, teacher distribution, and learning resources, ensuring that interventions are directed to areas with the greatest need.
Alausa added that Nigeria now accounts for 32 million of the 45 million education records hosted globally on the DHIS2 platform, making the country the largest education implementation on the system worldwide.
He said the development reflects efforts under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a more efficient and accountable education system.
The minister said the use of digital tools and data is helping shift education planning away from guesswork toward evidence-based decision-making.
He added that the goal is to improve learning outcomes by ensuring that policies and resources are guided by accurate and real-time information.
Alausa said the government will continue to expand the system to strengthen transparency, planning, and service delivery across the education sector.
