The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to democratic principles and national unity, framing the annual June 12 commemoration as a powerful symbol of the country’s collective resilience.
The call was contained in an official Democracy Day press release issued by Paul Odenyi, the Deputy Director of Media and Communication at the agency’s headquarters.
In the statement, the Director General of the NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, emphasised that June 12 stands as a historic monument to the bravery and determination of citizens in their pursuit of civil rule and the protection of basic human freedoms.
Issa-Onilu maintained that democracy remains the absolute best system of government for ensuring accountability and broad social inclusion, as it allows the public to freely select their leadership and actively participate in national development.
He noted that the holiday serves to celebrate both the prominent patriots who sacrificed their lives to establish democracy, and the ordinary citizens who consistently uphold these ideals in the face of ongoing societal challenges.
Issa-Onilu stressed that sustainable democratic governance extends far beyond simply voting in periodic elections.
According to Issa-Onilu, true democracy demands continuous civic engagement, strict adherence to the rule of law, an openness to opposing opinions, and a shared dedication to the public good.
He directed an appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them to actively distance themselves from political violence, the spread of fake news, and hate speech—vices he warned are capable of tearing down national cohesion and weakening democratic organs.
As the state organ tasked with instilling patriotism and national consciousness, he reaffirmed its institutional dedication to fortifying Nigeria’s political culture through ongoing community outreach, public enlightenment campaigns, and rigorous voter education.
Issa-Onilu extended appreciation to traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, the media, and development partners for their roles in sustaining peaceful coexistence.
He urged all Nigerians, irrespective of differences, to use the Democracy Day celebration to build a more harmonious and prosperous federation.
