The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the personal data of Nigerians, describing data privacy as central to citizens’ rights and the growth of the country’s digital economy.
In a statement issued to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration on June 12, the Commission said the protection of personal data is closely linked to the power of citizens’ voices and broader nation-building efforts.
The NDPC said its mandate remains to ensure that Nigerians’ personal information is properly protected across digital platforms, while also strengthening trust in the country’s expanding digital space.
It noted that as Nigeria’s digital economy continues to grow, the need for strong data protection frameworks has become even more important in promoting accountability, transparency, and public confidence.
The Commission added that safeguarding personal data is not only a regulatory responsibility but also a key part of strengthening democratic values in a modern, technology-driven society.
It said the rights of citizens to privacy must be respected by both public and private institutions, especially as more services and interactions move online.
The NDPC stressed that its ongoing efforts are aimed at ensuring compliance with data protection laws and promoting best practices among organisations handling personal data.
It also called for greater awareness among Nigerians on the importance of protecting their personal information in order to prevent misuse and abuse in digital spaces.
The Commission said Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the importance of citizens’ participation in governance, noting that data protection supports that participation by safeguarding trust in digital interactions.
It reaffirmed its readiness to continue working with stakeholders to build a secure, trusted, and inclusive digital economy for all Nigerians.
