Residents of Oro-Owo Community in Rumueme Kingdom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, are licking their wounds after another round of devastating flooding triggered by Tuesday’s heavy downpour in the Rivers State capital.
The flash flood, which swept through the area with ferocious intensity, left many families counting huge losses as homes, businesses, and valuable property were submerged and damaged.
Scenes of chaos, with floodwaters invading living rooms, destroying household items, and disrupting daily life.
Speaking to our Correspondent Secretary of the Oro-Owo Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr. Eze Otuonye, lamented the recurring nightmare, saying the floods have become a constant threat that paralyses economic activities and exposes them to serious health and environmental dangers.
“Our children cannot go to school, our shops are ruined, and we live in constant fear every time it rains,” one resident said, his voice heavy with frustration.

He said the community has now sent a passionate appeal to the Rivers State Government for immediate intervention. They are demanding urgent and lasting solutions to the perennial flooding that has plagued the area for years.
The Secretary of the Oro-Owo Community Development Committee expressed deep disappointment over the government’s perceived inaction.
“Despite several appeals and complaints made to the relevant authorities over the years, we have received little or no response,” Otuonye said.
He urged the state government to act decisively by tackling the root causes of the flooding and urgently improving the community’s drainage infrastructure to safeguard lives and property.
The residents begin the painful task of cleaning up and salvaging what remains of their belongings. Many are hoping this latest disaster will finally jolt authorities into action, even as the rains continue to fall daily in Port Harcourt.
