The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and Meta Platforms, Inc. have launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening data protection and privacy safeguards in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Sunday, June 8, 2026, and signed by the Head of Media Unit and Certified Data Protection Officer (CDPO), Itunu Dosekun, the Commission announced the launch of the Meta-Supported Initiatives for Data Protection (M-SIDP).
The initiative, according to the NDPC, forms part of the regulatory engagement with Meta following earlier investigations into the company’s data processing practices in Nigeria.
It said the matter was concluded in 2025 through a court-approved settlement, which included commitments by Meta to support a two-year programme of public-facing data protection measures.
The Commission explained that the programme is designed to align with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, the General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID), and the NDPC Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (2023–2027).
It noted that the M-SIDP will focus on key strategic areas, including governance, research and development within the data protection ecosystem.
The initiative will also strengthen safety and sustainability mechanisms across Nigeria’s broader technology and digital ecosystem.
In addition, the programme will support capacity development for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs), aimed at improving enforcement and compliance standards.
The NDPC stressed that the settlement does not limit its statutory powers, adding that it will continue to regulate data processing activities in Nigeria in line with existing laws and frameworks.
The Commission pledged to continue provide periodic updates on the implementation of the programme and called on stakeholders to support efforts to build a secure and accountable data privacy system in the country.
