The federal government will honour Super Eagles captain and coach Stephen Keshi by putting his name on the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame in Lagos, 10 years after he died.
Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami made this announcement during a lecture in Lagos that was held to remember the football legend.
According to Odegbami, Keshi’s contribution to Nigerian football and sports diplomacy earned him a place among the nation’s most celebrated sporting icons.
”The existing list of names on the Wall of Fame will now include Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, a captain of the Nigerian Green Eagles and national team coach ” Odegbami said.
“He has been considered worthy, and his contributions identified, justified and approved NIIA.” The ceremony to honour Keshi is on July 28. This is one day before the anniversary of Keshi’s burial.
The Wall of Fame is a monument. It was set up by the NIIA to honour Nigerians who have helped the country’s image and diplomatic goals through sports.
Stephen Keshi one of the few people who have won the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and, as a coach. He was captain of Nigeria when they won the 1994 AFCON title. He also coached the Super Eagles to win the title in 2013.
