Government Comprehensive Secondary School (GCSS), Borikiri, Port Harcourt, has emerged winner of the 2026 Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Science Competition after defeating six other secondary schools in the grand finale held in Port Harcourt.
The competition, sponsored by NLNG in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), tested students in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and wildcard categories.
At the end of the contest, GCSS Borikiri secured first place with 57,189 points. Niger Delta Science School came second with 49,135 points, while Enitonia High School, Port Harcourt, finished third with 47,686 points.
Other participating schools included Government Secondary School, Eneka; Community Secondary School, Rumuomasi; Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Borokiri; and Comprehensive High School, Alesa, Eleme.
The top three schools received science laboratory equipment, textbooks, laptops and other prizes to support science education and learning.

In the science project exhibition category, Government Girls Secondary School, Oromenike, emerged first with an average score of 83.3 points. Comprehensive Secondary School, Ogidigba, placed second, while Government Girls Secondary School, Finimah, came third.
Speaking at the event, NLNG General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Sophia Horsfall, described the competition as a platform for promoting academic excellence and innovation among students.
She explained that the programme had evolved from a science quiz to a broader science contest aimed at strengthening students’ knowledge and encouraging them to apply scientific principles to solving real-life challenges.
According to her, the future belongs to young innovators and problem-solvers who can use science and technology to drive national development.
