At 30, Winifred Alfred Lawson is beginning to gain attention in Rivers State’s political space after officially declaring her intention to contest for the Rivers State House of Assembly seat representing Degema Constituency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Bakana-born aspirant from Degema Local Government Area is not entering politics from the usual path. Known as a professional photographer, public relations specialist and people manager, Winifred is gradually becoming one of the young faces many people are watching as conversations around the next election cycle begin to grow.
Her declaration has already stirred reactions within Degema, especially among young people and women who see her ambition as a sign that more young voices are beginning to step forward in Rivers politics.
According to her, the decision to contest is driven by her desire to contribute to the development of the constituency and ensure better representation for the people.
Supporters have continued to describe her as passionate, approachable and connected to the grassroots. Many also believe her background in communication and public engagement could help her better understand and speak for ordinary residents in the constituency.
Politics in Rivers State has long been dominated by established figures, but Winifred’s emergence appears to reflect a gradual shift as more young aspirants begin showing interest in leadership positions once occupied mainly by older politicians.
For many of her supporters, her candidacy represents more than just another political ambition. They see it as part of a growing movement pushing for fresh ideas, youth inclusion and stronger community engagement in governance.
