The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, has urged stakeholders in the gas, power, and financial sectors to stop working in isolation and adopt coordinated strategies to resolve Nigeria’s long-standing energy challenges.Mrs Eyesan made the call on Thursday 14 May 2026 at the 2026 Gas-to-Power Sector Stakeholders’ Engagement held at the Afreximbank Africa Trade Centre in Abuja.
The forum focused on power sector sustainability and framework implementation. She expressed concern that despite Nigeria’s huge gas reserves of 215 trillion cubic feet and years of policy interventions, including the Domestic Gas Supply (DomGas) initiative that began in 2008, progress has remained slow due to fragmented efforts.
“Upstream producers are working alone, infrastructure development is not keeping pace, and power distribution companies are not aligning with others,” Eyesan said.
The NUPRC boss criticised institutional rigidity and policy grandstanding, warning that continued disconnection would hurt Nigeria and the continent. She stressed that the country should now be looking beyond domestic needs to meet regional energy demands.
Eyesan welcomed recent global support for increased oil and gas production, especially from the United States, amid the energy transition.
She called on stakeholders to break barriers, embrace innovation, and deliver lasting solutions to avoid repeating the same challenges in the next decade
