About 800 Redeployed Dangote Refinery Engineers Recalled To Lekki Facility

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has initiated a major workforce recalibration, officially recalling approximately 800 engineers who were previously sidelined following a period of industrial friction.

In a series of reports issued on Friday, May 1, 2026, the refinery management confirmed that the affected technical staff; many of whom had been redeployed to the Group’s cement and sugar subsidiaries are being invited back to the Ibeju-Lekki facility.

The move, described by the company as a “conditional pardon,” follows a detailed internal review and high-level appeals from key stakeholders. For the business community, this recall is seen as a strategic play to stabilize technical operations at the 650,000 barrels-per-day plant, which remains central to Nigeria’s energy security goals.

The roots of the dispute date back to October 2025, when the refinery management redeployed over 800 engineers following allegations of operational disruptions and “sabotage” linked to unionization efforts.

At the time, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) launched a nationwide strike to protest the move, arguing that the engineers were being unfairly targeted for their labor affiliations.

The standoff caused significant concern regarding the refinery’s production timeline, but a government-brokered compromise eventually saw the workers moved to other Dangote business units rather than being terminated.

In a memo signed by the Group Vice President of Oil & Gas, Devakumar Edwin, the company emphasized that the decision to bring back the engineers was not an easy one but was rooted in a belief in second chances.

However, the pardon comes with a stern warning: any further instances of misconduct will attract “immediate and decisive sanctions”.

The refinery is currently under immense pressure to ramp up its daily output of gasoline and diesel, and the return of these engineers, many of whom were trained abroad specifically for the commissioning of the plant is expected to provide a critical boost to technical efficiency.
