President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed the conduct of the 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across Nigeria, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and a reflection of strong internal democracy within the ruling party.
In a statement released on May 23, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, after the President participated in the APC presidential primaries held at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos State, Tinubu said the exercise demonstrated grassroots participation and democratic maturity within the party.
The President, who arrived at the venue alongside his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Jumoke Oduwole, and former Minister of Finance Wale Edun, among other party leaders.
Tinubu commended party members for their conduct during the exercise, noting that the process reflected commitment to democratic values and internal party cohesion.
“This is a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate,” the President said.
He added that the primaries across the states showed strong coordination and adherence to party guidelines, including ward congresses, local government congresses, delegate accreditation, validation, membership registration, and certification of the electoral process.
The President expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation displayed nationwide, saying it reflected a high standard of democratic practice within the APC.
Tinubu further stated that the party remains committed to transparent and inclusive processes that allow members at the grassroots level to freely choose their leaders and representatives.
He also praised electoral officials, party leaders, and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and credible exercise across the country.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and implementing policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
