The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, representing Rivers East Senatorial District in the red chamber as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Senator on Publicity and Communications, Mr. Peter Oriri, the announcement was made during the plenary session on Wednesday 22 April 2026 by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, following the vacancy created by the demise of the former Chairman, Senator Barinada Mpigi.
According to the statement, Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, was also appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs which was previously held by Senator Onyesoh.
As Chairman of the Committee on Works, Senator Onyesoh is tasked with overseeing federal infrastructure, particularly road construction and maintenance across the country.
The Committee plays a critical role in monitoring the activities of relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, ensuring proper implementation of budgetary allocations, and promoting transparency and accountability in public works.
He will also lead legislative scrutiny of policies and projects in the works sector, conduct oversight visits, and recommend reforms aimed at improving the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of Nigeria’s infrastructure.
The statement added that Senator Onyesoh is expected to leverage his experience and leadership capacity to strengthen oversight, enhance service delivery, and contribute meaningfully to the development and maintenance of the nation’s critical road network.
