A tragic boat mishap has claimed the lives of three children along the waterways of Bayelsa State, raising fresh concerns over safety in riverine transport.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday near Ikebiri-One in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The wooden commercial boat was reportedly travelling from Azuzuama to Yenagoa when it capsized.
Eyewitnesses said the accident happened at about 1 a.m. Preliminary findings suggest that overloading and a possible failure of the boat’s water pumping system may have contributed to the disaster. Passengers on board were said to have struggled as the vessel began to take in water before eventually overturning.

The victims, two boys and a girl aged between six and fifteen years, were reportedly asleep when the incident occurred. They were initially declared missing, sparking a search effort by residents and divers.
After hours of search operations, community divers recovered all three bodies from the water. The remains have since been returned to the Azuzuama community, where families and residents are mourning the loss.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with water transportation in many riverine areas, especially at night and under poor safety conditions. Residents are now calling for stricter enforcement of safety measures, including passenger limits and proper maintenance of boats, to prevent future tragedies.
